Born in Toledo in 1940, Antonio Villanueva moved to Paris in 1962, determined to join the ranks of blue-jean nomads studying painting in the French capital. He settled in the artsy Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, working as a cartoonist, illustrator, and actor, before traveling to the Canary Islands.
A fortuitous meeting with the Spanish sculptor, architect, and activist César Manrique led to collaborations on Manrique’s native Lanzarote. In 1968, encouraged by friends, Villanueva traveled to Ibiza for the first time.
Captivated by the island’s gentle people and free-spirited lifestyle, he settled in Santa Eulalia del Río, near the famed Sandy’s Bar, a hub for artists and thespians. Villanueva’s work captures the light and energy of Ibiza, reflecting the island’s vibrant, bohemian spirit that continues to inspire him.
